Delta County’s Olympian John Burritt

As an enthusiastic promoter of cross-country skiing, and former cross-country ski instructor, I can say that John Ray Burritt is one of the finest, most graceful and accomplished cross-country skiers I have ever had the pleasure of skiing with.

Hotchkiss resident John Ray Burritt was chosen to represent the United States in the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, Idaho.

Bullish on beef

One of the fun activities the Black Mesa Cattlewomen do each year is sponsor beef cookoffs at Crawford School and Hotchkiss K-8. The students learn nutritional information and cook delicious recipes. Judging a beef cookoff at Hotchkiss K-8 on March 13 are (left to right) Helen Wakefield, Shirley Cotten and Joetta Burns.The Black Mesa Cattlewomen provide prize money and gift bags for all the participants in the cookoffs. They also donate the ground beef.
Colorado has a rich heritage of cattlewomen who have been at the heart of the cattle industry. Black Mesa Cattlewomen trace their historic roots back to June 26, 1941.

Eighty years of resourcefulness

d06_bp1Al Spika grew up in a blacksmith shop, where raw metal was hammered into tools, utensils, agricultural implements and other practical items. During the war years, the steel used to manufacture spare parts for farm equipment was instead directed to the war effort.
