Runner, teacher, soldier, coach

d10_bp1When J.B. Lopez joined the Army in September 1971, little could he have known what kind of race lay just ahead. The son of a World War II vet and a schoolteacher, First Sergeant Lopez spent the next 33 years of his life on the run, accumulating the life lessons which uniquely qualified him for his present job — teaching JROTC and coaching cross-country/track at Delta High School.

Business is sweet!

Consumer interest for Cheryl’s Sweet Pleasures Creations is running high with Noble, Samantha, and Dominick Rial on her first day in business. The siblings’ father is pastor of the startup His Resting Place Ministry in Delta which benefitted from Cheryl’s first two weeks in business.
Cheryl Hartter of Eckert is proof that economic activity increases when government regulation is cut.

Cheryl is taking her love for baking great things to eat and starting a new business, "Sweet Pleasures Creations."

Locavores, those making a conscious decision to produce, purchase and consume local foods, are growing in numbers across the country. In Delta County, more people are growing their own food, raising chickens and meat animals, and producing lots of milk.

Charity riders will visit Delta

More than 175 riders will take part in the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, which begins in Napa, Calif., and travels over 2,500 miles before finishing at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas. Founded by former NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kyle Petty, the ride raises funds and awareness for Victory Junction, a camp created for children with chronic or life threatening illnesses.

Setting a great example

Members of the Thunder Mountain Wheelers ATV club are active in building and maintaining trails on public lands in and around Delta County. The club actively seeks funding for such work, helping to provide plenty of trails for the public to enjoy as they explore the beautiful backcountry administered by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. It isn’t all work for these energetic riders . . . each month the group hosts rides and other family-oriented activities.

ATVs —all terrain vehicles — are a common sight on agricultural and the federally managed lands of western Colorado.

A valuable work tool, ATVs are used on farms, ranches and orchards to herd livestock, inspect and repair fence lines, fertilize and apply chemicals to crops and by water commissioners and ditch riders to inspect and repair irrigation systems.

A home away from home

When John Taylor and Elizabeth Thompson purchased the towering brick home at the top of Delta's 4th Street hill in early 1994, they had no idea they were embarking on a "never-ending fix-up campaign."

Eighteen years have passed and still their to-do list outlines projects for indoors and out.

Family roots run deep

Jackson Cashell, held by Miriam Hartig, is her next to the youngest great-grandchild. His hand and footprint are among those plaques in Miriam’s collection (pictured below).

Miriam Hartig feels that the following quote from "Fiddler on the Roof" relates to her family history. "Sunrise, sunset, swiftly fly the years —One season following another laden with happiness — and tears."

She has albums filled with photos, a wall of hand and footprints of 23 great-grandchildren, another wall of wedding photos of family members, and a written record of her grandparent's immigration to America.

Easter hoppenings

The Easter Bunny is hop, hop, hopping into Delta Saturday, April 7. The Delta Lions Club will host their annual Easter egg hunt in Cleland Park Saturday morning beginning at 9 a.m. sharp.

From 10 a.m. to noon, Bill Heddles Recreation Center will be the site of an Easter Egg Stravaganza.

Living in harmony
