I was told that there was a cattle egret at Hart's Basin, so here I am hunting for it — better than washing dishes but they'll be waiting for me when I get home. We've had less water this year (and it's receding rapidly) so most of the shore bird activity has been along the west shore, adjacent to Vela's ranch.

What an unusual migration, but I say that every year!
By March 10, we had two small flocks totaling 39.

Now is the time of surprises at Hart's Basin. Most of the sandhill cranes have gone on in their northward migration.

I can see sandhill cranes far away, over in Vela's fields that border the reservoir near the dam. Magnification up... probably close to 100.
