Lavender Association receives grant to study essential oils

The USDA and the Colorado Department of Agriculture awarded a specialty crop grant to the Lavender Association of Western Colorado. The association proposed a project to answer the question of which cultivars produce the largest quantity and the highest quality oil.

This study will compare the following 10 cultivars: L. angustifolia cultivars Folgate, Twickle Purple, Royal Purple, Royal Velvet, Maillette and Buena Vista and L. x intermedia cultivars Impress Purple, True Grosso, Fat Spike Grosso and Super.

This information will be used to further develop Colorado's lavender industry, educate Western Slope lavender growers about lavender essential oil distillation and the uses of essential oil and hydrosol and promote Colorado's high-altitude essential oil.

The project will begin April 1 and will be completed by April 2014. Total project funding is $18,467.
