Book is back in limited quantities

The Delta Extension Office has just printed 50 final copies of "When the Grass Stood Stirrup High," an historical and photographic review of our local landscapes and how they have changed since settlement of the area began.

This book is highlighted by 75 photographic comparisons of local landscapes, including historic photos of the beginnings of the City of Delta and the Town of Hotchkiss, as well as rare historic images of our natural landscapes culled from private collections, archives and libraries.

What’s the future of irrigated ag?

The default way for Colorado cities to increase their water supplies is to "buy and dry," buying agricultural water rights and permanently transferring them to urban use. According to Jacob Bornstein, a program manager for the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB), who spoke Feb. 25 at a water seminar at Colorado Mesa University, continuing along this path could lead to the drying up of up to 40 percent of irrigated agriculture in the South Platte River Basin by 2050, an outcome state leaders are eager to avoid.

Hydopower project EA available for review

The Bureau of Reclamation announced Feb. 25 that it released a draft supplemental environmental assessment on Ridgway Dam Hydropower Interconnection Facilities.  The draft EA supplements the 2012 Ridgway Hydropower Environmental Assessment and finding of no significant impact, and addresses additional details and information on the interconnection and transmission facilities.

State’s new drilling rules gain final approval

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission on Feb. 11 gave final approval to what it calls "the strongest rules in the country" for limiting the impact of drilling near residences and other occupied buildings. The new rules will take effect August 1.

Forest Service continues to plan for prescribed burns

Information that the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG) do not plan to conduct prescribed burns this year has been erroneously reported.

The GMUG has conducted "pile-burning" throughout December and January and is continuing to make plans for prescribed burns this upcoming spring.

Local Angus producers listed in national report

Several Angus producers in Delta County have been recognized nationally by the American Angus Association® for having some of their best producing registered Angus cows included in the association's 2013 Pathfinder® Report.

Paul and Trish Schmucker, Hotchkiss, top the list of local producers with six registered Angus included in the 2013 Pathfinder Report.

Get hoppin’ to order your seedling trees

It's almost Easter and, this year, the Easter Bunny isn't bringing eggs, he's bringing trees — seedling trees, to be exact — direct from the Colorado State Forest Service Nursery.

Just like Easter eggs, these seedlings come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including deciduous trees, shrubs and conifers, and you can purchase seedlings as either bare root or potted.

Beef weigh-in is big step towards fair sale

Delta County 4-H'ers and FFA students weighed in their prospective market beef on Saturday, Feb. 2. Excitement was high for the 41 local kids who brought 50 steer and seven heifers to be weighed in, because the annual market beef weigh-in is the first step toward raising beef for the 2013 junior market livestock sale, which will be held this coming August, during the Delta County Fair.
