Hotchkiss firm wins forest contract

Bolstering a long-term strategy to address fuel reduction and overall forest health, USDA Under Secretary Harris Sherman today announced two Forest Service 10-year stewardship contracts totaling $13.4 million.

The two contracts identify projects that will treat a minimum of 20,000 acres in two national forests.

Colorado is part of major water treaty with Mexico

In a major show of cooperation between the United States and Mexico, representatives from the Colorado River Basin States, the United States government, and the government of Mexico signed an historic agreement that furthers the commitments of both countries to the 1944 Water Treaty between the U.S. and Mexico, while recognizing that increasing water demands on the Colorado River will require creativity and flexibility.

Under this five-year agreement, Mexico has committed to accept voluntary shortages when Lake Mead reaches certain levels, while gaining opportunities to receive surplus water under certain conditions.

Conservation loans available

USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director Trudy Kareus announced that funds are now available for Guaranteed Conservation Loans. Conservation loans allow farmers and ranchers to implement conservation practices on their land that will help protect natural resources.

The Delta Conservation District is hosting a workshop featuring DARCA, the State Ditch and Reservoir Company Alliance on Thursday, Nov. 29, at Memorial Hall in Hotchkiss from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The workshop will help all irrigation water users on the Western Slope meet the challenges of these changing times.

Hartland Dam design firm wins award

c08 hartlandPhoto submitted Merrick-McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group’s Hartland Dam fish and boat passage facilities win engineering award for innovation. The American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado announced its 2013 Colorado Engineering Excellence Awards winners at a gala event held Nov. 5, at the historic Brown Palace Hotel.

Seven Colorado engineering firms received Engineering Excellence Awards and were among 24 projects submitted by firms statewide.

Soil health tillage taking root here

c08 soilhealthPhoto submitted The use of cover crops was a main topic of discussion as about 20 local ag producers and support professionals toured four soil health projects under way from California Mesa at Delta to Olathe. Staff from the NRCS and local conservation districts attended also. Soil health practices are gaining interest and new adherents as local producers share their experiences and look to reap the benefits of improved water quality, less water use, lower carbon inputs, and improved yields.Soil health farming practices are taking root in the Uncompahgre Valley.

A tour of local soil health fields conducted by Jerry Allen and attended by about 20 area producers and ag industry support professionals made demonstration stops at four local farms.
