"Delta County Farm Service Agency (FSA) wants to remind producers of the approaching deadline to purchase Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) coverage for 2013 spring seeded crops," announced Alan Bull, county director.
The upcoming deadline for purchasing coverage is the close of business on Friday, March 15.
For Delta County, coverage is available for oats (grain or forage), sorghum for forage, beans (dry edible and green), broccoli, cantaloupe, cauliflower, sweet corn (for seed), cucumbers, eggplant, flaxseed, gourds, lettuce, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, sugar beets, tomatoes and watermelon. Coverage may be available for additional spring planted crops which are commercially grown.
The NAP program offers payments to eligible producers who suffer losses from natural disaster in excess of 50 percent of their expected yield.
An eligible producer is an owner, landlord, tenant or sharecropper who shares in the risk of producing the crop or is entitled to share in the crop available for marketing from the farm or would have shared had the crop been produced.
To be eligible to receive coverage on these crops, a producer shall pay a nonrefundable service fee. The service fee is the lesser of $250 per crop or $750 per producer per administrative county, not to exceed a total of $1,875 per producer with farming interests in multiple counties. Payment of the service fee is due at the time the producer files an application.
Bull noted, "With the application closing dates rapidly approaching, we urge farmers, landowners and ranchers who wish to elect coverage or continue their enrollment to complete an application at their local FSA office."
