Detective Sgt. Greg Birely and Officer Steve Furstenfeld transport a dog that was hit by a car near the corner of 8th and Meeker in Delta Monday afternoon. The city’s part-time animal control officer works mornings only, so when the call came in to dispatch, the decision was made to send Sgt. Birely out in the animal control vehicle. Officers Furstenfeld and Artaz (not pictured) helped load the dog and take it to Two Rivers Veterinary Clinic for treatment. Fortunately the dog was friendly, despite being in pain. Officer Furstenfeld said it was not wearing a collar or tags. Animal control and enforcement in city limits requires collaborative effort from the city, CAWS and local veterinarians.Rather than move its adoption center from Delta, Delta County Citizens for Animal Welfare and Shelter (CAWS) has decided to renew its contract while conducting a capital campaign to build a countywide animal shelter.
"We would have had a problem placing our animals if we moved out of there, so we decided to extend our contract," said Rand Kokernot, CAWS board president.
