This scholarship is a tribute to Kathleen Wheeler, who taught school for over 40 years, 26 of those in the English department of Hotchkiss High School. She was not only an excellent English and speech teacher, she was also known for encouraging and caring for all of her students.
In the mid-1960s, the Hotchkiss PTA established the original Kathleen Wheeler Scholarship. When the PTA disbanded, the First State Bank assumed its funding. Since 1984, the Laureate Beta Mu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi has adopted the scholarship as its major service project. Kathleen Wheeler was a valued member of the sorority until her death in the fall of 1991.
The Laureate Beta Mu chapter selects the recipient of the two-year $1,000 award. The scholarship continues to honor the memory and wishes of Kathleen Wheeler to help students further their education.
