The West Elk Mountain Rescue (WEMR) is a group of unpaid volunteers dedicating our time to rescuing lost and injured people. We are under the authority of the Gunnison County Sheriff Department.
The principle area we cover is in the West Elk Mountains from Black Mesa to McClure Pass and everything in between, including the Kebler Pass area. This is a very high-recreational-use area for all of Delta and neighboring counties. We also assist Pitkin, Mesa, Delta and other neighboring SAR groups in our adjoining areas.
We are prepared to go out on a rescue any time of the day or night, all year long, summer and winter. We search for lost hunters, hikers, skiers, backpackers, four-wheelers, fishermen and women, horseback riders and anyone who uses the back country.
We need your help in order to better serve the people who will someday find themselves in need of our services in the mountains. We are looking for volunteers who enjoy the backcountry and have wilderness skills. We are also looking for a volunteer to staff our pager and call out members when we are notified. You don't have to be a wilderness expert for the call-out position, but have a phone and some time and live in the Paonia/Crawford/Hotchkiss area. We have monthly meetings (on the first Wednesday) and trainings to further our knowledge and practice our skills. We have a strong sense of camaraderie which fosters our team's strong abilities.
Monetary donations are always accepted. Most of the persons we search for and rescue do not pay any fees or donate to us, but we gladly continue our services because we believe in our strong sense of community and like to help out our fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
