Hotchkiss updates its traffic regulations

The Town of Hotchkiss has been using the 2003 Model Traffic Code even though there have been four updates since then. That was rectified on Nov. 8 with the Hotchkiss Town Council voting unanimously to approve Ordinance 2012-2 Model Traffic Code updating it to 2010.

Attorney Sandra Nettleton put the ordinance together. The ordinance contains some town-specific modifications that pertain to the public works director, Mike Owens, being able to put up signs restricting the use of vehicles above a certain weight on highways due to deterioration, rain, snow or other conditions.

The public works director can erect signs prohibiting the operation of trucks, commercial vehicles or construction vehicles on designated highways and may impose limitations on their weight, size or type.

The public works director can temporarily close any highway and establish detours because of general construction, public safety or maintenance.

The public works director can temporarily close to traffic any part of a highway for celebrations, parades, special events or civic functions provided a valid permit has been issued by the town.

Finally, the public works director can prohibit all vehicles on a highway except authorized emergency and maintenance vehicles.

The chief engineer for the Colorado Department of Transportation added an endorsement making it legal for the Hotchkiss Marshal to write tickets on highways as traffic is passing through town.

The Model Traffic Code can be read at town hall.
