Fire destroys Sunshine Mesa guest house

A studio/guest house was fully engulfed in flames when Paonia and Hotchkiss firefighters arrived at 36432 Sunshine Mesa Road on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Delta County dispatch was notified of the blaze at 11:40 a.m.

According to Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee, the property is owned by David Torkelson. The guest house was occupied by his daughter and her husband, Ryan and Michelle Sparks. They were not home at the time.

The cause of the blaze is unknown but the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature. Two dogs who were in the guest home did not survive.

Donations for the couple who lost everything in the fire are being accepted at any NorthFork Bank Center.
