The lineup of entertainers for the sixth annual Pickin' in the Park Free Summer Concert Series has now been set. Every Thursday evening in Paonia Town Park starting at 6 p.m. and going until dark, concert-goers are going to have a fantastic musical experience for the entire family.
There will be children's activities, local food, beer and wine available.
Rob Miller of Pickin' Productions on May 15 announced the lineup.
Aug. 1 — Amy Helm, an Americana singer-songwriter from Woodstock, New York, and daughter of music legend Levon Helm is the first headliner. Helm is a spellbinding artist offering stunning vocals through a full range of musical styles. She is a gifted musician onmandolin and drums.
Opening for Helm will be Front Country performing California bluegrass.
Aug. 8 — Bradford Lee Folk and The Bluegrass Playboys will bring their deep love for traditional country and blues music. Folk was the lead singer for The Open Road Bluegrass Band. Award-winning records launched his global career. This August hear Folk with his new Nashville-based bluegrass band. Folk is heralded as "one of the most captivating performers in bluegrass music today."
The opening set will feature The Paul Sammons Band with local Americana pickers.
Aug. 15 – ATOMGA will bring Afro-beat dance music, funk and jazz to Paonia. The 11-piece band from Denver will get the park rocking with a four-piece horn section, incredible percussion, a deep-grooving rhythm section and solid, engaging vocals.
Opening for ATOMGA will be the Sand Sheff Trio offering desert-rooted country music.
Aug. 22 — The Birds of Chicago with JT Nero and Allison Russell complete the month of free concerts. They offer North American roots music via Chicago and British Columbia. Critics hail the duo. "Nero's fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell's silver and gold tones, is a fine thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you'll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar, it's haunting. Fired by the band, it's a full-tilt revival." They're magical.
The opening set by Cottonwood Creek of Crested Butte features the Emmitt Family children.
Rob Miller, in talking about the Pickin' in the Park amenities, says, "The North Fork Creative Coalition will be curating the kids' area this year and have some very exciting things lined up for the little ones. 2013 welcomes back local food vendor Delicious Orchards Organic Farm Market and introduces Ryan's Skewers as a new addition to our dinner selection. Both vendors emphasize locally grown and prepared food. Natalie's Ice Cream will also continue to be available. Paonia's Revolution Brewing will be serving fresh draft beer, and the West Elks Wineries will be pouring local vino. The audience is welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, coolers and picnics, but please note that no glass is allowed in the park."
All concerts will be broadcast live on KVNF Community Radio and will be streamed live on the net at www.kvnf.org.
Pickin' in the Park is presented by Pickin' Productions, The Kampe Foundation and KVNF Community Radio. Community sponsors, local businesses and the sales of local beer and wine at the park fund the entire series.
