Each year kids enjoy fishing at Volunteer Park's ponds in Paonia for the Return of Huck Finn Days Fishing Derby. This year the event is Saturday, June 22.
The Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery is hosting the fishing derby.
Last year, 200 people, including 93 kids ages 3-12 years old, got the chance to fish and win a bunch of prizes. Prizes are given in drawings and for dressing up like Huck Finn. The prizes are donated by local businesses and organizations. A total of 49 businesses and organizations made sure there were plenty of prizes last year. Outdoor recreational items for fishing, camping and hiking make great prizes, as do school supplies.
Cash donations will be used to buy prizes or to help defer the cost of the derby. "Every cent received from the sponsors will be used to buy fishing derby prizes or to pay for incidental costs associated with the Return of Huck Finn days; none is kept by the hatchery," said Adam Mendoza, hatchery project leader.
The hatchery would like to have more kids participate. The derby's purpose is to "instill the love of sport fishing to young children. They will be future sport enthusiasts and supporters."
Tami Zimmanck is volunteering again this year as coordinator of the fishing derby.
Agencies, organizations or others working with natural resources and the outdoors are invited to provide brochures for an information booth at the derby.
