Each year kids enjoy fishing at Volunteer Park's ponds in Paonia for the Return of Huck Finn Days Fishing Derby. This year the event will take place on Saturday, June 22, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery is hosting the fishing derby.
Kids from three to 12 years of age will get the chance to fish and win a bunch of prizes. Prizes are given in drawings and for dressing up like Huck Finn. The prizes are donated by local businesses and organizations.
The hatchery would like to have lots of kids participate. The derby's purpose is to "instill the love of sport fishing to young children. They will be future sport enthusiast and supporters."
Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Bring fishing poles and bait, but no lures.
Tami Zimmanck is volunteering again this year as coordinator.
Honkers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife mascot, will be on hand to meet the kids. Perhaps Smokey Bear will also be able to attend.
