Eleven of Sharon's Kids, ages 11-14, from the North Fork Valley attended one week at the YMCA Camp Santa Maria near Bailey in June.
Through donations, grants, and the help of volunteers, this non-profit corporation gives Delta County youth the opportunity to enjoy outdoor experiences.
The mission of Sharon's Kids is to help youth cultivate an awareness, understanding and appreciation for the natural world. The summer camp experience helps build values and develop character and leadership skills. Camp activities included boating, swimming, rock climbing, hiking, group games, making new friends and a lot of just plain fun.
"We try to plan an activity every month of the year," says Sharon Riegel, founder and president of Sharon's Kids. In August, Sharon and her husband, Dick Moore, took seven children to a private cabin for four days and two nights in the Big Cimarron of the Uncompahgre Mountains. They all survived an 8-mile, steep hike and two days of kayaking and fishing.
