Seth Weber is set to begin working on a new mural that depicts the North Fork as a "Valley of Abundance." The mural features beautiful mountain vistas, a peach orchard, a vineyard and a train loaded with coal.
In the foreground are laughing, playing children, which Weber believes are the valley's greatest resource.
A lovely young girl with deep blue eyes and a bright smile reaches for a luscious peach. That girl is Jubilee, the daughter of Seth and his wife Chelsea.
Seth penciled out his vision of "Valley of Abundance" last summer, before his daughter was diagnosed with a brain disease that cut her life short. She died July 1, 2013, at the age of 4.
As is typical in a small community like Paonia, the community rallied around Seth and Chelsea with prayers, compassion and a fundraiser that exceeded everyone's expectations.
Seth says the mural will not only serve as a memorial to Jubilee, it's also the best way he can think of to thank the community for all the support the family has received. Plus, Seth says it will be therapeutic for him to be able to focus on a large project like the mural.
The mural will be painted on the north side of Ollie's Ice Cream Shop at the corner of 2nd and Grand in Paonia. Seth says Ollie's was one of Jubilee's favorite places in the world.
Unfortunately, the project will mean painting over a collage created by Dick Doherty when the building was home to the Paonia Library.
Susie Coombe, a co-owner of Ollie's Ice Cream Shop and Glennie Coombe Gallery, said she thinks it will be fun, and fitting, to have a mural that's more representative of the valley.
Doherty has been contacted and although he has no problem with painting the wall, Susie says not everyone may feel the same way. "We expect initially there could be some people who will be upset when they see us painting over it, but I don't see how anyone can help loving the design Seth did for us," she said. "We think Seth's design will be a great tribute to his daughter, and it will be a great addition to the town. It's so beautiful!"
She added Ollie's will be accepting donations to cover the cost of paint. Weber is donating his time and talent.blog comments powered by Disqus
