Corinne Ferguson has gone from being a busy trustee on the Paonia Town Council to the busy deputy town clerk. Ferguson resigned as a trustee on July 31 because she had moved outside of town limits.
But her new address did not disqualify her from applying to be the next deputy town clerk.
Ferguson went through the same process as all applicants did. Barbara Peterson, town clerk, and Dave Knutson, who serves as a consultant for the town's personnel matters, selected three applicants to interview and to be tested. Both wrote up their questions for the interview separately. Both also selected Ferguson as the best choice for the job due to her wide range of experience, particularly in the insurance field and having worked on town policy.
Ferguson thought there might be some backlash with her going from the council to staff, but she has received nothing but positive feedback.
Just two weeks at her new job, Ferguson is seeing a fuller picture of what town staff deals with on a daily basis.
"It's definitely enlightening and it gives me a completely different perspective on how our government runs from the inside," Ferguson said.
"There's a lot of different things happening all at once. It's been eye-opening for me [considering] some of the expectations I had as a council member requesting information.
"There were times when I would feel that maybe it took longer than it should to get that information. But now being in the office and seeing how many things come in here in a day and how many other projects are being added on and how each one of us [on the council] came individually with our own thoughts, ideas and requests could make it a little difficult for two or three people on staff to fulfill in a day or a week," she said.
"I have a lot more respect for the amount of work and time and energy that [the staff] were doing per council request than I did before."
Some trustees have asked Ferguson how she feels being a part of the staff now. "They seemed receptive of the different perspective that I have."
Ferguson plans to attend future town council meetings now that she is on staff.blog comments powered by Disqus
