Check your mailbox for a new brochure from North Fork Ambulance. Inside it will explain how you, your household, your business can be a member for a low annual fee and have free transportation to Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Hotchkiss Marshal Dan Miller recently explained the community program. The North Fork Ambulance runs over 700 calls a year. That's the total amount for Crawford, Paonia and Hotchkiss. Paonia and Hotchkiss have two ambulances and Crawford, which has fewer runs, has one ambulance. The all-volunteer crews made up of a driver and an EMT will provide the service if one town's ambulances are all on calls.
The average cost of each run is $1,200. If someone has Medicare or insurance, sometimes all of the cost is not covered. With the annual membership fee, the cost to transport someone to the hospital is totally covered. There are only additional charges if the Delta Ambulance District or Care Flight is called in to assist.
Membership for seniors for an entire year and however many trips is necessary is just $40. A family membership covers all permanent members of the household and costs $60 a year. A business membership is $75 a year and covers any business patron who is ill or injured while on the premise during normal business hours. For the business owner and employees, family memberships can be purchased at just $50 a year.
"Even if you don't use [the ambulance service], it helps your neighbors and friends. That way we can stay in business. This is a non-profit organization," Miller said. The membership fees help pay for the cost of the service.
The brochure includes the form to send in with your payment. Payment is due the beginning of October.
