On Dec. 20, the Black Mesa CattleWomen sponsored a beef cookoff at the Hotchkiss K-8. The students created teams of four or fewer and were scored as a team throughout the competition.
The teams were given beef education literature provided by the Colorado Beef Council to read and study. The students completed a written test, chose a beef recipe and planned a menu. During the last part of the competition the students followed a scoring rubric, which required them to set up a table with place settings, decorations, a group name poster, a copy of the recipe and a menu showing the judges all of the food groups, from the USDA My Plate. While the judges looked over the table, the students cooked the main entrée, then served it to the judges. When the table, food and written test scores were averaged, the winners were announced. The students were awarded a packet of information and a cash prize.
The winners were — The Baconators, first; Butterfly Pirates, second; Shake N Bake, third; Carne Asada, fourth.blog comments powered by Disqus
