There's nothing more rambunctiously all-American than high school Homecoming.
The annual week of high-spirited activities culminating in the traditional Homecoming parade, football game and Homecoming dance afterward began for Cedaredge High School on Monday, Oct. 8.
The Bruins' opponent for the Friday, Oct. 12, Homecoming game will be the Meeker High School Cowboys.
Special activities at the school throughout the week will be highlighted by a special "dress-up" theme for each school day.
Monday's theme was heroes for upperclassmen, and a hero sidekick for the underclassmen. A bit of class consciousness on display there.
Tuesday's sartorial selections carries forth with Monday's class consciousness theme as upperclassmen take on the role of villains and underclassmen that of their minions.
On Wednesday, everybody pairs off with anybody as students are encouraged to join in the fun dressing up as duos – prince and princess, as one possible example of the many combinations available.
Movie themes are on tap for Thursday's wonderland of wardrobe as each of the classes takes on identities from a movie. Seniors get to be characters from Snow White; that casts most of the guys as, you guessed it, one of the seven dwarves.
The juniors' movie theme dress will take away from the Spiderman series; sophomores will be putting the big hurt on local supplies of green foam rubber as they dress like characters from Shrek. And the freshman class, always incredible at any event, will feel right at home as characters from Incredibles.
Friday will be big on school spirt as the traditional "rah-rah, go team go!" day for school spirit and attire, tastefully done or not. Royal blue with accents in white will de rigueur. No slackers on Friday — everyone in blue and white.
Other special events during the week begin on Monday with a movie night beginning at 6:30 p.m. But, let's be sure to get all that homework done first.
Tuesday brings a chili cook-off event at 3 p.m. Okay, everybody — no road kill, please. And following the heart warming chili feast there is a volleyball game scheduled against opponent Moffat County.
That giant stack of wooden pallets in the lot south of the school is there for the purpose of being done away with in a single, impressive, school spirit-raising blaze of glory: sorry, no marshmallow toasting allowed. The annual bonfire is set to light up Cedaredge skies around dusk.
Thursday is a day to rest up from a late night at the bonfire and to get caught up on all the homework that's been skipped during the week attending other Homecoming events. Nothing doing Thursday night, students. Let's hit those books.
But look out Friday. That book report may have been put on hold for the weekend after all as feverish planning and final preparations for the class float was under way into the previous night.
The Friday grand finalé of Homecoming week includes a parade scheduled for 1:30, the big game at 6 p.m., and the even bigger Homecoming dance from 8:30 to midnight.
