DMS salutes veterans

a05 wrightPFC WrightAt a Veterans Day assembly Monday, Delta Middle School students and staff showed their gratitude for the men and women who have served our country with honor and distinction. In the audience were veterans from the U.S. Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard and National Guard.

They were treated to patriotic music from the Delta Middle School Honor Choir and the Delta High School Concert Band, as well as a stirring video created by Aubrey Jones and Kaleb Hawkins, who also served as master of ceremonies.

The assembly opened with the posting of colors by Delta High School JROTC members Justin McCormick, Tristan Davis, Jordan Meraz and Paige Connett. They also demonstrated the proper folding of the U.S. flag.
Patriot Pen winners Alexia Quinn and Isaac Timbreza read their winning entries. Both are seventh graders who addressed the theme, "What Would I Tell America's Founding Fathers."

The keynote speaker was PFC Shawn Wright, a 2005 graduate of Delta High School who is a motor transport operator in the U.S. Army. He spoke about the sacrifices made during his two tours in Iraq. Sacrifice is not just a word used to describe those who have lost a limb in combat, but also to those who have felt the mental and emotional impacts of being separated from friends and family.

After the assembly, the veterans were invited to enjoy punch and cookies with members of College For Every Student, the student organization that put together the assembly.
