School district is one of six to qualify for reimbursement

Delta County Joint School District #50 is one of just six school districts in the state to become eligible for reimbursement through the Colorado Department of Education Office of School Nutrition. The state education department has certified Delta County as meeting the requirements of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act and is eligible for a six-cent reimbursement for all lunches served since Oct. 1.

Food service director Rhonda Vincent said six cents may not sound like much, but at the rate of 2,900 meals a day, 20 days a month, reimbursement totals about $2,500 for the month of October alone.

At a recent school board meeting she reported the number of meals being served is picking up after a slow start to the school year.

It's been a challenge to keep serving sizes for meats and grains within federal guidelines and satisfy hungry students, she added. Apparently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has heard similar feedback and is now offering more flexibility for school district meal planners to meet the meat and grain requirements.
