DHS grad will spend four months in Ecuador

Raveen Mulford, daughter of Julie and Vally Mulford of Delta, will travel to Cuenca, Ecuador, Dec. 27 to spend four months volunteering in orphanages. Mulford graduated in 2011 from Delta High School and currently attends Brigham Young University-Idaho.

Mulford will travel with other volunteers through Orphanage Support Services Organization (OSSO), a non-profit charitable organization that sends volunteers on a regular basis to help in local orphanages in both Cuenca and Quito, Ecuador, two of the country's largest cities. The program began sending volunteers, mostly college-age, in May 1999.

Since that time they have sent over 2,000 volunteers to help in various aspects of the program, doing everything from changing diapers and feeding infants to giving physical therapy or teaching English.

Mulford has already had preparatory experience working with children. She grew up with younger siblings, had various babysitting jobs throughout high school, and taught younger children in church. Mulford also has experience working with people with special needs. She has spent time with and is close friends with people who have various disabilities. She also visits a nursing home weekly that cares for residents with Alzheimer's disease. Mulford has participated in many service projects in her community. Some of these service activities include: bell ringing for the Salvation Army at Christmas time, making "pillowcase" dresses for girls in Africa, making bears for the hospital to give to hospitalized children, painting the bedroom of a cancer patient, and helping with an eye glasses drive for the community. In addition, Mulford has had opportunities to build her leadership skills. Throughout all of high school she was a music section leader and she served as the vice president of Leo Club (a service organization) her senior year. She has also served in various class presidencies in her church. OSSO is excited to have Raveen volunteer with the program.
