North Fork Vision salutes Learner of the Month
Kristin Evans, 16, is Learner of the Month for the North Fork Vision Home and Community Program.
"Kristin Evans is nothing short of inspiring, she is an exceptional person and an engaged learner always going beyond what is required.
Her passion for learning and ability to focus on assignments is what I noticed first as well as her kind disposition with other students," stated educator Todd Sheets with Hutman Media.
Kristin is the oldest child of six in her family. She takes an active role in helping her siblings in their education. Her resource consultant, Marian Pierce, commented, "I am continuously impressed by the patience she displays when supporting her family and her exemplary maturity."
"Once I graduate from high school I plan to take a year to travel and broaden my horizons. My end goal is to go into the medical field, and from there open small clinics in a third world country, with an emphasis toward teaching 'barefoot doctors' within each community. 'Barefoot doctors' is the name for men and women who were trained in basic medical procedure, and Chinese medicine, in the 1960s by the Chinese regime. They can take their abilities to out-of-reach villages, performing basic medical care and can refer people to the clinic in situations they cannot handle," shared Kristin. She is also pursuing her interest in midwifery by studying Native American herbs and midwifery with instructor Alicia Michelsen. She is taking three science courses to ensure that she is undertaking as much as possible in order to be fully prepared for her next steps toward becoming a midwife.
This semester she is taking a full class load including ACT prep, anatomy, art, math, geography, speech and debate, and Spanish as well. She also stated, "I'm working on my fourth rewrite of a book I started in a class last year. In a month or two I plan on beginning the editing process and send it to a publisher, just for the fun of it! I've also taken a class with Hutman Media working on a film project last semester. The class is over, yet as a team we are still plugging away at editing the film to enter into the Paonia Film Festival this spring.
"I've been homeschooled all my life, and this year, enrolling in North Fork Vision, I had the opportunity to take advantage of so many different classes and instructors. This community is so rich with different instructors and opportunities. As a family, Vision plugged us in to the community at large when we enrolled in the program this fall. It has been a wonderful experience," said Kristin.
She also shared, "My biggest challenge in life is falling into the trap of 'perfection.' Beating myself up on how I should be able to do this well or I'm not good enough. I have to make sure things work out. I am not this. I am not that. I work hard at doing everything to the best of my ability, and leaving the rest to God. Being the oldest child has shaped me into a person who at times just needs to take a deep breath and relax on the throttle of life. This year I helped with a project that concerns true beauty, and how especially women tend to beat themselves up when they don't fit the mold. In so many ways it has changed the way I view myself. So day by day, I'm giving up that 'perfection' and working on becoming who I was created to be, and not that perfect teenager on the wall (I doubt she'd enjoy life half as much as I do)."
"My greatest joy is that I'm loved, and cherished, by my family, friends, and the one who loves me most unconditionally – God. An old quote puts it best: 'I will sing for joy in God, explode in praise from deep in my soul!' That is the sort of love that blows my mind, which is where I find my joy."
