Delta Opportunity School gathers over two tons of food

Delta Opportunity School held a Souper Bowl of Caring food drive contest among classes in participating schools and as a result eight truckloads of food were donated. The overwhelming amount of food donated — 4,264 pounds — topped all projections!
The food items will be used to combat hunger in four ways. First, appropriate items will be used in weekly backpacks for the DOS Food for Thought program, which serves 150 students weekly throughout the school year and provides a food pantry for students and their families six times in the summer.
Second, DOS donated items needed by the Abraham Connection homeless shelter. Third, oversized items and six 50-pound bags of onions were donated to the Delta Food Pantry. Fourth, DOS students will be using the cake mixes to bake items to be sold to support a program that helps kids in Peru.
The winning classes received banana split parties served by DOS students. Second and third place classes and BELA preschool received popsicles. The winning teachers earned gift cards to Davetos, some of which were donated by Davetos. A huge thank you to the generosity of the Delta and Cedaredge participating schools. The top school was Cedaredge Elementary School with 1,601 pounds of food. Garnet and Lincoln almost tied with just over 1,300 pounds each. The families in these communities really support each other.
DOS students loved working hard advertising, weighing and collecting the food, and giving the parties. They feel that with this food drive contest their idea of "kids feeding kids" happens in a communitywide way!
The winning classes are pictured. The runners-up were Mrs. Farmer's fifth grade and Mr. Moore's first grade classes from Lincoln Elementary; Mrs. Velasquez's kindergarten and Mr. Atchley's fifth grade classes from Garnet Mesa Elementary; Mrs. Gash's fifth grade and Mr. Bond's fourth grade classes from Cedaredge Elementary School.
