On Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30, Delta High School was the host for the annual national qualification meet for the Western Slope Chapter of the National Forensic League. Students from eight Western Slope schools vied for the opportunity to compete at the national tournament to be held June 16-21 in Birmingham, Ala.
Two entries were selected in each of eight categories — public forum and Lincoln-Douglas debate, original oratory, national and foreign extemporaneous speaking, and dramatic, humorous, and duo interpretation. Delta qualified entries in three of the eight categories, one of only two schools to have entries in multiple categories.
In public forum debate, Paige Bowling and Ridge Green qualified as the only undefeated team with a 5-0 record. Also qualifying were the duo team of Adam Malcolm and Christien Mackey, and humor interper Haley Donathan.
Delta also had several competitors in high alternate positions, including Linh Nguyen, first alternate in original oratory, Cidney Fisk, second alternate in Lincoln-Douglas debate, Ayasha Richards, second alternate in drama, Arla Nelson, third alternate in humor, and Cruz Arias, second alternate in Congress.
The Delta team will be undertaking extensive efforts to raise the nearly $12,000 necessary to finance the trip, and will gratefully accept any donations from individuals or businesses.
