Delta Opportunity School students recently had a fashion show to raise money to support their Food for Thought Program. Food for Thought is operated solely by DOS students and provides weekend backpacks of food to over 200 preschool-high school students in Delta and Cedaredge.
Food purchases run $10,000 per year.
The fashion show featured 21 Delta Opportunity School students who stepped outside their comfort zones in an effort to bring in money for food for the needy children in our community. They modeled outfits from Walmart, Tara's, Beauty and the Bling and Second Edition. Audience members bid on the outfits with the volunteer services of Ken Kincaide, auctioneer. Willyn Webb, DOS counselor and service learning coordinator, introduced each student and told about the outfit the student modeled on the stage at the Delta Performing Arts Center. Then Ken Kincaide took over and started the bidding. The student posed as the audience bid on the outfit. The bidding wars and the smiles on the students' faces made the event very entertaining.
Prior to the show, early that morning, eight of the students had their hair cut and/or styled by the students of the Delta-Montrose Technical College cosmetology program. Thank you to Christy Collins and her crew for donating their services. The hair styling not only made the students look great but gave them the confidence to get on stage.
First up were the outfits donated by Walmart totaling $362 in value. Next came Tara's. Laura Morris, owner of Tara's, was welcomed to the stage where she told about each of the outfits and generously announced that she would donate both outfits which retail at over $425. One of the dresses, shown in the picture, is also worn by MissAmerica.
Seven outfits from Beauty and the Bling were modeled and offered to DOS at cost. Vanessa modeled with her mother Elizabeth Apodoca, a senior at DOS. LaNaya Mora, the daughter of DOS graduate Jasmine Abeyta, also wore a Beauty and the Bling outfit.
Katie Weins, a student of the Delta County Virtual Academy, modeled a handmade outfit she had designed and created herself. She featured an updated 1880s look complete with a miniature top hat and a skirt with a handwritten excerpt from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven."
The final store featured was Second Edition where many students put together complete outfits, shoes, belts and all. They generated a lot of bids and then got to keep their great-looking outfits. DOS paid only what the consignors had coming, a very minimal amount compared to the bids.
A luncheon reception featuring star-shaped sandwiches, fruits, veggies, quesadillas, cookies and more, prepared and served by DOS students, followed the fashion show. During the reception the buyers donated the outfits they had purchased back to the DOS student who modeled each one.
The fashion show raised $1,000 for Food for Thought and 21 DOS students have new outfits.
"This is a win-win for sure," Webb said. "The students chose outfits they could wear to job interviews or in the world of work or college. Many of the benefits, such as weekend food for needy children and successful job interviews are yet to come. However, the self-esteem gained from the event, the support of our local businesses and the generosity of the biddersresulted in a wonderful event. Thank you to the businesses and everyone who participated, donated, and purchased — then donated! We are already making plans for next year and thinking of ways to get more of the community involved in such a wonderful event."
