The Paonia High School speech and debate team, which includes a few members from Hotchkiss High, has established a strong program this year, especially in the Duo Interpretation category. In this event, two people act out a 10-minute humorous or dramatic scene from a piece of published literature while relating to the audience rather than to each other.
Paonia sent five Duo teams to the Grand Junction Tiger Talker Invitational tournament on Saturday, Nov. 16, sweeping the event by winning the top five places. Novice teams Chloe Helmer/Devin Kne and Eliya Sorensen/Ariana Sorensen tied for fourth place. They had won first and second place, respectively, in the previous week's Novice Tournament at Fruita. Jenny Emmons/Deanna Hart came in third, Sarah Tomei/Aidan Kne won second, and Noah Johnson/Dylan Tomei won first place.
In addition, Sarah Tomei won second place in the Poetry category.
On Saturday, Nov. 23, the team will compete in a mock Congress tournament in Delta.
Then, on Saturday, Dec. 7, Paonia will host its first Speech Only Tournament called, "Paonia's Great — There's No Debate!" The tournament will run from 8 a.m. to late afternoon and will feature a number of fun events such as creative storytelling and improvisational duo.
Community members will be trained as judges and will be provided with breakfast, lunch and snacks. If you would like to judge or help out with the tournament, please contact tournament director Tara Budinger at 201-0127.blog comments powered by Disqus
