The Delta High School speech and debate team inaugurated the 2013-2014 season by competing at the annual Tiger Talker invitational speech meet held at Grand Junction High School on Nov. 15 and 16. This meet drew eight schools from around the Western Slope to compete in a full slate of interpretive, public speaking and debate events.
Although Delta took only 10 students, the team placed third overall, due to strong showings in several events.
Interpretive competition saw Ayasha Richards take first place in poetry, while Alysha Richards placed third in the same event. In drama, Cruz Arias placed fourth, while in humor Lydia Stalcup came in sixth.
In public speaking events, Haley Donathan won first place in original oratory and Cidney Fisk took third in that event. Ridge Green placed second in national extemporaneous speaking.
Lincoln Douglas debate was another successful venue for Delta, with Cidney Fisk posting an undefeated 3-0 record for second place, and Ridge Green compiling a 2-1 record to place seventh.
In congressional debate, both Ayasha Richards and Ridge Green were nominated as outstanding speakers in their houses.
The team will spend next weekend at home, as Delta is hosting a day of congressional debate on Saturday, Nov. 23.blog comments powered by Disqus
