Providing dictionaries to third graders in Delta County is such a long-standing tradition some of the earliest recipients are now helping with the project.
Student Rotarians Ridge Green, Stephanie Sidor, Emily Kuta and Dustin Ownbey are Delta High School seniors.
During dictionary distribution last week, they told third graders at Lincoln and Garnet Mesa elementary schools what a useful tool the dictionaries have proven to be.
The colorful, hardbound Scholastic Children's Dictionaries have been a project of the Rotary Club of Delta for nine years. This year, the 45 members of the club distributed almost 200 dictionaries to Delta's third graders at no cost to the students, the teachers, the school or district.
"It is this spirit of giving and community service that makes our volunteer work with Rotary tremendously rewarding," said club president Kevin Kiefer.
Rotary clubs throughout the world believe very strongy in supporting the development of our youth, especially in the area of literacy, he added.
"We believe this dictionary will assist your child in furthering their educational development throughout the coming years," he said in a letter addressed to the students' parents.
Local sponsors of the project included Delta Ace Hardware, First State Bank of Colorado, Hellman Motors and Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
