The Delta High School Speech team competed at Central High School in the annual Warrior Invitational Speech Meet on Jan. 17 and 18. In sweepstakes competition with nine Western Slope schools, DHS took first place.
It was a total team effort, with almost every member of the team earning a spot in finals and subsequently placing in their events. Many team members earned honors in more than one event.
Debaters led the way, with all entries placing. The public forum team of Ridge Green and Anthony Streich in their first competitive outing posted a 4-1 record and took second place. The team of Haley Donathan and Hannah Owens went 3-2 and placed fourth. In Lincoln Douglas debate, Cidney Fisk compiled a 4-1 record for second place. She also won a gold medal for earning the highest number of speaker points in the event.
In public speaking events, Delta continued to dominate original oratory with all three entries qualifying to the final round. In the final standings, Haley Donathan was in first place, Cidney Fisk placed third, and Hannah Owens came in sixth. Extemporaneous speaking saw Ridge Green place fifth in foreign and Anthony Streich come in sixth in national.
Interpretive events were also successful for Delta. Ayasha and Alysha Richards competed in both poetry and duo, and qualified for the final round in both events. As they were only allowed to compete in finals for one event, they chose duo, where they took first place. Lydia Stalcup qualified for the final round in humor, where she placed fourth.
The team will travel to Montrose to compete Jan. 24 and 25.blog comments powered by Disqus
