This year Delta Middle School offers a class that provides students the opportunity to view mathematics in a different way and receive a bit of extra help when they need it. The idea behind the class is to teach strategies that make mathematics more accessible and user friendly.
"We work to rid the confusion and frustration surrounding ideas like fractions and functions," said assistant principal Jennifer Magner.
"But we could not have these classes if it weren't for the fabulous group of peer tutors who volunteer their time to help their fellow students. A lot is asked of them, and boy do they deliver. Once a week we get together so the tutors can learn strategies for helping their peers better understand mathematics. They have had to learn a variety of strategies and algorithms, how to apply them, and most important, teach them. This group of students has amazing patience and dedication. And though their peers may not say thank you, their gratitude is obvious. We are proud of them every day and so thankful to have each and every one of them. They rock!"blog comments powered by Disqus
