School superintendent attempts to allay fears

As the 2011-12 school year draws to a close, "a time of uncertainty and turmoil" hangs over teachers and staff members of Delta County Joint School District #50.

In a May 11 letter to staff, superintendent Jerre Doss acknowledged that rumors are rampant.

Top spellers

b04_spelling1On April 6, 32 students from around Delta County came to the Delta Center to compete in the 2012 6th grade spelling bee. After more than an hour, the field had been narrowed to six, then five, four, three . . . until there were only two. The two young ladies, Sami Wollert from Delta Middle School and Elliana Kuhl from Paonia Elementary, continued to go back and forth until Wollert emerged the winner.

Winding down a great year

Just before spring break, the Delta High School Key Club was able to send 14 members and two advisors to the Rocky Mountain District Convention. The Key Club has done many great fundraisers this year, and plans to do even more next year. Key Club members would like to thank their sponsoring club, Delta Kiwanis, for a successful year. DCMH Volunteers award scholarships

The Delta County Memorial Hospital Volunteer organization began a high school scholarship program in 2006 with the goal of supporting local graduating seniors who are pursuing postsecondary education in the field of healthcare.

The number of scholarships and amount awarded is determined on the success of the hospital's gift shop, which the volunteers operate.

DMS seventh grader wins essay contest

Elizabeth Ward, a seventh grade student at Delta Middle School, won the Barnes & Noble essay contest with her nomination of Julie Mottern in the "My Favorite Teacher" competition. Students who wished to enter the contest were asked to write a 500-word essay or poem describing how one of their teachers has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire them.
