Up to the challenge

b03 trophyPhoto submitted Up to the challenge Jason Sturgis, Paonia High School student body president, accepts a trophy from Chief Scott Leon and Lt. William Palmer on behalf of the student body. Paonia High School won the seatbelt challenge sponsored by the Western Regional Occupant Safety Coalition. The students competed against Cedaredge and Hotchkiss high schools in a two-week challenge. Each school participated in five different activities, and the school which showed the greatest improvement in seatbelt usage won. Paonia students improved seatbelt usage by 25 percent. Coalition members presented the trophy to Sturgis at an ice cream party Tuesday, May 21.

Paonia Rotary Club’s scholars announced

b02 rotary1Maxwell Menely-ShererThe Rotary Club of the North Fork Valley has provided nine scholarships valued at $2,000 each to four graduates at Hotchkiss High School, four at Paonia High School and one at North Fork Vision School.

The Rotary Club Scholarship Committee met individually with the applicants and interviewed them in April and May.

Lions scholarships

b02 lionsPhoto submitted Lions scholarships This year the families of the late Rod Blake and Jim Cheney, longtime Paonia Lions, selected Paonia High School graduating seniors Mandy Bushta and Tyler Kendall as the 2013 recipients of $500 Paonia Lions Club Memorial Scholarships. Mandy plans to attend the University of Northern Colorado and Tyler is headed to Utah State University. The scholarships were presented by Lion James Gall.

Kathleen Wheeler scholarship awarded

b02 westergrenAlexis WestergrenHotchkiss High School senior Alexis Westergren, daughter of James and Genevieve Westergren, has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the Kathleen Wheeler Memorial Scholarship. She plans to study kinesiology at Colorado Mesa Universtiy this fall.

First State Bank announces scholarship winners

First State Bank of Colorado is pleased to announce that the winners of the bank's annual scholarship contest have been chosen. Twenty-five high school seniors at three Delta County high schools vied for the scholarships.
