Planting the seeds of knowledge

As Lincoln Elementary School students get ready to plant sunflower seeds, Erin Barkey quizzes them on what it takes to make plants grow. She brought an interactive exhibit called “Seed Survivor” to the school earlier this month. The mobile classroom features multi-media and virtual reality games, an insect video scope, a sunflower seed planting station, a watershed center, talking walls and more. Seed Survivor was designed to teach youth that plants need water, light, healthy soil and nutrients to survive. It also teaches them that plants are essential for human survival by producing food, income, oxygen and enjoyment for us all. The exhibit is an educational outreach from Agrium Fertilizer.

No shortage of heroes

a05 clementePhoto by Pat Sunderland No shortage of heroes Alonso Saenz shared interesting facts about one of his heroes, professional baseball player Roberto Clemente, at a hero’s fair at Lincoln Elementary School last week. As part of their social studies unit, the students were asked to choose a famous person. They researched the individual, prepared a timeline and designed a poster. Then, using props, they presented their information first to their class then to the school as a whole. LES teacher Mike Chastain said the research and oral presentation meet district standards for fifth graders. As students walked down the halls at Lincoln, they had an opportunity to learn more about the Wright Brothers, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lewis and Clark, Anne Frank, Walt Disney, John F. Kennedy, Albert Einstein and many other famous people mentioned in their history books.
