Earth Day celebration

a01 earthdayPhoto by Pat Sunderland Earth Day celebration Third graders Hunter Goff and Jordan Fine help plant a flowering crab tree at Lincoln Elementary School. Two trees were planted, on either side of the sidewalk leading to the front door, and were dedicated to retiring teachers Diane Almy and Lori Bendickson. The trees were provided by West Elk Mine as part of an annual Earth Day outreach which also includes a coloring contest for third graders throughout Delta County. LES principal Paul Rodriguez explained Earth Day was first observed in 1970 and is intended to increase appreciation and awareness of our natural environment.

County’s top spellers

County’s top spellers

On April 12, the Delta Center for the Performing Arts was the site of the annual sixth grade spelling bee. Twenty-five of the county’s best sixth grade spellers competed for the honor of top speller. The spelling bee was judged by Pauline Carr, Mary Blake, Helen Groome and Linda Campbell. The students battled each other for 13 rounds before the championship round began. After the dust settled the results of the spelling bee were: Baxter Waltermire, North Fork Community Montessori School, first; Jadeyn Jensen, Hotchkiss K-8, second; Lauren Davey, Delta Middle School, third; Cesar Comacho, Hotchkiss K-8, fourth; Zeron Lawson, Delta Middle School, fifth; and Alyssa Trujillo, Delta Academy of Applied Learning, sixth.
