The following Garnet Mesa students earned a Terrific Kid Award from the Kiwanis Club of Delta for their efforts to be responsible citizens and students. A valuable trade

a07 weldersPhoto by Pat Sunderland A valuable trade Delta Vision students Jade Bissell and Rayden Jones got a jump on their future by taking a welding course at Delta-Montrose Technical College. The enthusiastic students demonstrated their skills at the 2013 College, Career and Business Expo hosted by DMTC last week. Now that he’s certified Bissell says he hopes to land a job paying $25 an hour.

Scholarships awarded

On Tuesday, April 24, the DMEA board meeting presented scholarships to deserving students all over the DMEA service territory. This year’s awards were increased to $1,500 to help the students offset the rising cost of higher education. DMEA board president Nancy Hovde announced the recipients and each one summarized their aspirations and expressed their thanks. Pictured above are DMEA general manager Dan McClendon (far left) and DMEA board president Nancy Hovde (far right) who congratulated scholarship recipients (left to right) Joshua Hardin, Jacob Helleckson, Michael Shull, Skylyn Webb, Paige Bowling, Lindsay Russell, Clarissa Whiting, Haley Turley, Rachael Latta, Erica Decker, Emma Card and Tess Skoe. Band performs Mixter composition

a07 misterMary MixterFor its final performance of the school year, the Delta High School concert band performed a piece composed by Mary Mixter, an accomplished trombonist in the band before she graduated from Delta High School in 2007.

Her love for music took her to CU Boulder where she received degrees in trombone performance and composition.

Greenhouse offers hands-on learning

a06 greenhousePhoto submitted Delta Opportunity School students are utilizing the greenhouse at Delta-Montrose Technical College for hands-on lessons that extend beyond botany and horticulture.The students at the Delta Opportunity School have been busy for months with a huge greenhouse project. This project all began with an idea to utilize the greenhouse behind the Delta-Montrose Technical College to grow plants that produce food, encourage individuals to grow their own food crops, as a comprehensive hands-on science project and as a service learning project for the students of the Delta Opportunity School.
