Sense of achievement

a03 girlsonrunPhoto submitted Sense of achievement About 100 students from Garnet Mesa and Lincoln elementary schools are involved in the “Girls on the Run” program. In preparation for the season-ending run in Grand Junction this weekend, they ran a practice 5k at Delta High School last week. As they completed each of the 12 laps, they “earned” a letter on their arms which ultimately spelled out “I just ran a 5k!” Track team members from Delta Middle and Delta High schools joined the girls on the track or cheered them from the sidelines. Walmart donated a gift card for refreshing beverages served at the halfway mark. For more information about the program, the race, or how you can get involved, visit www.gotr westerncolorado.org.

Earth Day celebration

Two trees were planted, on either side of the sidewalk leading to the front door, and were dedicated to retiring teachers Diane Almy and Lori Bendickson. The trees were provided by West Elk Mine as part of an annual Earth Day outreach which also includes a coloring contest for third graders throughout Delta County. LES principal Paul Rodriguez explained Earth Day was first observed in 1970 and is intended to increase appreciation and awareness of our natural environment.
