Amateur wins People’s Choice honors

c03 artshowPhoto by Hank Lohmeyer The Best of Show entry in this year’s Edge of the Cedars Art Festival was a pastel entered in the professional category by Cedaredge resident Ginny Wise, third from right. The work was given the honor by show judge Elizabeth M. Lynch, second from right. At far right is Karen Spears, president of the local Zeta Omicron chapter of ESA sorority. At left are ESA members Tammy Blanchette, Mary Callahan and Anna Maria Turilli. The 41st annual Edge of the Cedars Art Show sponsored by Zeta Omicron Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority has been completed. Eighty-eight artists exhibited a total of 234 entries which included paintings, photography, sculpture and an open category. In addition to ribbons, a total of $1,200 in cash and merchandise certificates was awarded. Monetary awards ranging from $25 to $200 went to 22 different artists.

This year's judge was Elizabeth Lynch. Her earliest art study/awareness began under the tutelage of her father who was a sign painter and outdoor muralist in the Midwest. Her graduate work was at the University of Notre Dame and Iowa University. Clay therapy, due to a severely injured hand, acted as the catalyst for her present-day love of sculpting. The greatest part of her studio time is spent enjoying the steps taken to turn a clump of clay into a completed piece. Her work is vibrant with life and multi-faceted with meaning. Her sculpturing has moved to a new medium by her learning and adapting bronze techniques for the creation of new pieces. She has shown her work in Iowa, Chicago, Denver, Central City and several places on the Western Slope. Patrons across the United States and in Holland, Austria and Bolivia own her work.
