Sprinting for the finish
Conditions were terrific for the Grand Mesa Summit Challenge sled dog races held over the weekend. The races attracted racers from around the region in both sled dog and skijoring competition. The event was organized by the Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club. To the right, Drake Banson of Carbondale comes across the finish with his two dogs still pulling hard. Below, a six-dog team driven by #34, Maria Amodei, gets a fast start. Winners this year include Kale Casey of Paonia and his team Pops and Quinn in the two-dog, six-mile skijor (Casey also won the one-dog skijor), Lynn Whipple of Montrose in the six-dog, six mile race, Charlie Odegaard of Flagstaff, Ariz., in the eight-dog, eight-mile race, Brently Johnson of Texas in the two-dog, four-mile skijor, Micahel Wason of Cedaredge in the three-dog, four-mile skijor, and 12-year-old Page Hauptmann of Montrose in the Sportsman class.
