Nearly every day we hear of school shootings, accidents or some dangerous, new substance that young people have started to use. Yet, in this community, there are many outstanding, positive outreaches for our kids.
Just to name a few, there is: Young Life in the high schools, Wyld Life in the junior high schools, Partners, ASTRA, Scouts, 4-H, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and many others.
Having worked with several of these, I can personally attest to the quality of each organization and the positive activities they provide for young people and their families.
Yet 4-H enrollment is down, and many of these organizations need funds, volunteers or both. Anyone who wants to help but cannot find the time or who doesn't have funds to donate can give items to local thrift shops — some of which have accounts to benefit non-profits — or just purchase items from garage or bake sales or other benefit fundraisers.
There are many challenges right now. But I hope we will all do whatever we can to help the young people in this area to not only survive, but thrive.
