I would like to applaud and support the efforts of some of the North Fork's citizens and the leaders of Western Slope Conservation Center and Citizens for a Healthy Community to provide constructive input to the BLM's Resource Management Plan, currently under revision. A broad-based group has put together the North Fork Alternative Plan as to how the BLM should address petroleum exploration and production in the North Fork Valley.
The alternative plan provides protections from oil and gas drilling for the existing resources that we find most important to our ongoing economy, including coal reserves, agriculture, water, and wildlife, to mention a few. While I might have preferred input to the effect that the North Fork Valley is just not a good fit for oil and gas exploration at all, this citizen group felt that such an approach wouldn't get a hearing at the BLM. Therefore they have devised a more open plan, the North Fork Alternative Plan, that provides important protections in the event that the BLM attempts gas leasing in the future.
I support this plan, and I urge all concerned Delta County residents to support it as well. Please sign the support petition at www.northforkaction.com.
