This letter is a request to the citizens of Crawford to support the North Fork Alternative Plan for the management and development of oil and gas leasing and publicly owned minerals on land under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management.
It's important for citizens to know that the North Fork Alternative plan addresses oil and gas development only.
It has nothing to do with mineral rights in private hands, not managed by the BLM, and it does not make any recommendations for the BLM's management of coal resources, recreation or travel on public lands.
The North Fork Alternative Plan employs common sense in providing a management framework that ensures that the BLM will protect important resources from the risks associated with oil and gas development. Air and water pollution are the most obvious dangers. An increase in heavy truck traffic on our local roads is another hazard. Less obvious is the impact of an increase in the population of transient oil and gas workers — those who will swell the ranks of our town as long as the work lasts, and abandon it when the work winds down. Finally, the plan protects the unique scenery we love.
As a resident of Crawford and a former Crawford Town Council trustee, I know how strongly the people of Crawford feel about our way of life here. I believe the North Fork Alternative Plan is vital to preserving that way of life. It would protect Crawford's pristine water supply and the views along the scenic byway that brings visitors to our town, and it would keep drilling away from town limits and Crawford School.
I also know that the people of Crawford value information that helps them make good, informed decisions about issues that affect our town. I encourage everyone to learn more about the North Fork Alternative Plan by going to www.citizensforahealthycommunity.org or www.theconservationcenter.org. Once you've learned more, I encourage you to show your support by adding your name to the petition at www.north
Please join me in calling on the Bureau of Land Management to incorporate the North Fork Alternative Plan into the resource management plan it is currently revising for our area. This is our one chance to come together and make sure the BLM gets this right.
