Help! What is happening to my wonderful city? One of the many reasons I chose Delta to return to in my retirement was the beauty of our Main Street area — a large part of this beauty being the wonderful trees along our sidewalks.
I must have been out of the loop when it was announced that said trees were all being removed, so imagine my shock when I turned onto 5th Street between Main and Palmer, only to find not one spot of shade or bit of green to be seen!
I was told this was being done due to the extreme cost of repairing raised and cracked sidewalks resulting from tree roots. I find this amusing only in that I can't find a single person who knows of any downtown sidewalk repair having been done since these trees were planted! I guess we're to believe that the construction of the truck bypass overrides any funding for the maintenance of the beauty of our downtown area?
Shame on you, Delta! We live in high desert here — does this mean we aren't entitled to any shade when enjoying our downtown area? I imagine it won't be long before all traffic will take the bypass — why bother stopping in Delta when you'll just bake in the hot sun while trying to walk along our streets?
Goodbye to the Delta I know and love!
