As property owners on Main Street in Delta we were horrified to learn of the tree cutting that the city parks department has started implementing. Seeing all the stumps on both sides of 5th Street made us physically ill.
The shade that those trees provided was important, necessary and something you can't put a price on. The explanation we received from the city was that the tree roots were cracking the sidewalks and they decided it would cost too much to repair them. There are ways of managing trees as they grow, and arborists in cities deal with this situation all the time. Cutting down healthy trees is definitely NOT the answer. If the overall plan for Delta is to create a more pedestrian-friendly downtown, they need to rethink this idea, because having no trees for shade is the opposite of friendly and fewer people will stop and spend time enjoying what our hard working businesses have to offer.
