As I have sat and watched the demise of two businesses in Cedaredge in just a few short months, I wonder how many of the other businesses are just barely hanging on, hoping they can recover from their losses this summer. Simply breaks my heart.
There is nothing we can do about it now, so we must move forward and do something to get this town back in a positive way.
We as a town cannot just hope someone else will do something. We must get together and start working as a community. Unfortunately, we have a beautiful main street to nowhere. When one walks down Main Street and looks at the work, one has to question why the spacing of the lights on the north side of the street is not the same, the lights between Marilyn's Nails and The Dream Weavers are not the same. As an artist in town said to me, it looks ridiculous. The historic pillars are skewed to the roadway. The sidewalk in front of Sunset Printworks is sloping toward the doorway, as it does in front of Dream Weavers. Where is the snow going to go? Secondly, how are two vehicles going to pass down Main Street and Second Street at the same time? I heard this was going to be a pedestrian-friendly street, and it appears that at least 12 parking sites are gone.
I have to disagree this project could not have been put on hold. Why couldn't it have been started after AppleFest and then finished in the spring. With for sale signs in almost every other building, let's try and paint a different picture to people looking to put new businesses here in our town. Here are a couple of ideas. With so many wonderful artists in Cedaredge, they could start painting storefronts on every window. Make it look like the buildings have life. Paint a mural of a western scene on one of the buildings, an orchard on another, create little storefronts on the other ones. We cannot ask the owners to help with the cost as they have endured enough by loss of business, so this would be all volunteer. This would be a great spring project so when new folks drive through our town they would go, "Wow, this is a town waiting to happen. We would love to put our business here."
We also need to promote this as "The Gateway to Grand Mesa." We need to make people stop. Why would they stop when it appears this is a dying town?
Let's all get on the bandwagon and make our town what it once was! Write down your ideas and let's plan a community meeting. Let's get this going before it is too late! We didn't move here for no reason, we moved here because of the beauty that is all around us. This town could offer so much more, for us and for new business.
I cannot sit idly any longer and do nothing. So let's come together and do something!
