I love many things about our area, but one aspect I especially love is the opportunity to buy fruit, vegetables, and meat produced by my neighbors on small local farms. It is better for me, the local economy and the planet, really.
It has come to my attention that the Food and Drug Administration is proposing new rules in the Food Safety and Modernization Act that threaten family farms and local food production.
There is a forum being organized by the Western Colorado Congress to help us understand the potential impacts of the rules on our local food producers and to help us participate in the public comment process before the Nov. 15 deadline. The forum is on Oct. 30, 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Delta Presbyterian Church, 4th & Meeker. Steve Warshawer, a farmer and produce safety expert, will speak about the proposed federal rules. If you value local produce or you are a local produce farmer yourself, I invite you to attend this forum.
