As a parent, grandparent, foster parent and teacher I was appalled and greatly disturbed by the recent comments made by District 50 school board member Kathy Svenson. As a citizen of this great county, freedom of speech is very near and dear to me.
I believe that she has a right to her opinion and to voice that opinion in a solicited, appropriate environment, which this was not. If the topic is an area of concern within the school district, then it should be discussed on the appropriate platform in an open manner. She is on the school board to represent the citizens of a particular area of the district, not to use her place on the board to express her own personal opinions.
My grandson attends Delta High School and I am very uncomfortable with her statements. Personally I would like to see the school board censure her for her comments. I am of the opinion that if she is going to represent herself and not the community from which she was elected, she needs to resign from the board. Minds are like parachutes, they do not function well until opened.
I ask other parents and community members to stand up and tell Ms. Svenson that her comments were unacceptable, and she owes the students, parents, and community members a legitimate apology.
