I live in Delta County for many reasons — mild climate, breathtaking views, fun outdoor activities, wide open spaces and entertaining wildlife right out my front door — but the main reason I live here is because of the wonderful people who also live here.
I have always been heartwarmed by the outpouring of generosity and kindness that flows from the people of this valley, and this Christmas was no exception.
As the Cedaredge Rotary Club chairman of the free Christmas dinner in Cedaredge this year, I was worried that since Christmas is family time and money is short I wouldn't have enough donations or help to pull this dinner off. Then it began! As soon as notice hit the paper, my phone started ringing. Over 60 people volunteered to help. The donations from numerous individuals and clubs started arriving. The churches and individuals volunteered to help cook the food. Volunteer drivers and Helen Marton delivered meals to homebound folks. Les and Dorothy Mergelman (founders of the dinner) who had planned to be out of town for Christmas ended up cooking the meat, loaning us their barbecue grill at the last minute and loaning us most of the cooking utensils.
Wait! It didn't stop there! Christmas Day people not on my list jumped in to help. The Stolte Shed filled with laughter and goodwill! The donation jar overflowed! The dinner was a huge success!
I came home Christmas afternoon exhausted, but absolutely filled with joy! So thank you everyone, for giving me one of the best Christmases of my life!
